EXHIBITION RESULTS

The heart and soul of the Show for 110+ years, the Exhibition component evolved this year to see online entries allowed for the first time. We were pleased to experience the most entries we’ve seen for numerous years, contributing to an inspiring diversity of exhibits on display, being admired by a bigger crowd than ever at the Show two weekends ago. This year the Canning Show Exhibition saw a total of 343 people submitting 2580 entries, ranging from 2 to nearly 100-year olds sharing in $13,000+ in cash prizes.

With all seats filled at the Exhibition Awards on Saturday just gone, the best of the best of exhibitors were awarded for their efforts. Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds’ main Exhibition Hall hosted a classy three-course affair for distinguished guests, award-winning exhibitors and CAHRS committee, members, volunteers and staff, many of them frocking up in colourful attire to celebrate the International Year of Fruit & Vegetables. In-between performances from DJ Snake Mountain, Formidable Vegetable Soundsystem and Patti The Pig, the applause was loud for some of the best entrants showcased at one of WA’s biggest community-focused Exhibitions.

No stranger to the Awards stage, Ron Speed took top honours, taking out the George H Wilson Perpetual Award, won by the exhibitor with the most points gained from placements overall. With most of his winning entries in the Photography Section, he also picked up numerous awards in Cooking and Home & Dairy Produce. Ron’s bag of awards included 31 first places, 3 Champion placings and a total of 219 points.

Also of note:

  • In terms of Overall Most Points, Ron Seaton came in second place, and Brad McKnight
  • A hit last year, Alice Johnson again made a big impression for someone so small, taking out the Most Points Overall in the Youth classes, plus achieving Champion status in two sections.
  • Formidable gardener Rini Smith won the coveted trophy for Best Exhibit in Fruit and Vegetables for an amazing 4th time having previously picked up the award in 2014,2019, 2020, and also won a prize on the night for her fruit and veg themed attire.

CAHRS CEO Dianne Begg applauded, “Modernisation of the traditional competitions of the Show has been well received as we can see from the increased levels of interest and standards of exhibits displayed. We are seeing more handicrafts and overlooked skills being honed by exhibitors and excitingly fantastic use of recycled materials. Our first year of accepting online entries went relatively problem free and sets the scene for expansion of the competition to a wider audience in the future.”

After last year’s event broke audience records for the second year in a row with 13,500+ smiling attendees, sold-out Sessions and won awards, all signs are excitedly pointing to 2021’s LiveLighter Canning Show being bigger and – as the just-released program supports – better than ever!

LIVELIGHTER CANNING SHOW EXHIBITION WINNERS REVEALED

The LiveLighter Canning Show 2020 saw nearly 15,000 tickets snapped up, record-breaking attendees and sold-out Sessions, heralding a new age for this key community event. The Exhibition has very much been the heart and soul of the Show for 110+ years, and was a huge hit with thousands over the course of the Show. With all seats taken at the Presentation Evening & Awards this Saturday just gone, we are now excited to reveal the winners of one of WA’s biggest community-focused Exhibitions.

The Exhibition proved the perfect catalyst to ignite people’s creative spark, discover and celebrate the community’s talents, and to provide a much-needed distraction for what has been a tumultuous 2020 for many. 285 people entered the Canning Show Exhibition, ranging from 2 to nearly 100-year olds, amounting to a total of 2,244 exhibits.

Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds’ main Exhibition Hall hosted a classy three-course affair for distinguished guests, award-winning exhibitors and Cannington Agricultural, Horticultural and Recreational Society Inc (CAHRS) committee, members, volunteers and staff frocking up in colourful jungle-themed attire. In-between performances from DJ Snake Mountain, African Oz Drum ‘N’ Dance and Gobbles The Gorilla, the applause was loud for some of the best entrants showcased at this year’s Canning Show Exhibition.

No stranger to the Awards stage, Ron Seaton took top honours, taking out the George H Wilson Perpetual Award, awarded to the exhibitor with the most points gained from placements overall. A veteran entrant with a formidable garden, this is the seventh time he’s won the award, adding it to a cabinet already packed with wins in 2003, ‘06, ‘11, ‘12, ’16 and 2019. With all his entries in the Flowers plus Fruit & Vegetables sections, Ron’s bag of awards included 30 first places, 5 Champion placings and a total of 185 points.

Alice Johnson also made a big impression for someone so small, the Under 12-year-old taking home a swag of awards to honour her creativity in an extremely diverse array of classes. A perfect example of how the Exhibition is for everyone, and anyone can have a go and improve their skills.

CAHRS CEO Dianne Begg applauded, “From recycled craft capturing more people’s imagination to our infamous Flower Hall blooming brilliance, this year’s Exhibition showed the positive things that have been created and nurtured in 2020. The International Year Of Plant Health brought attention to important messages in visually impressive ways. All in all, we felt lucky to still be able to host this important part of the Canning Show, which at many points this year we thought would not be possible. We thank the community for their support and can’t wait to showcase even more debut entrants next year!”

Key awards handed out on the night included:

EXHIBITION READY TO IGNITE COMMUNITIES’ CREATIVE SPARK AS EVENT IS GIVEN GREEN LIGHT

Last year’s Canning Show was a triumph, with record-breaking crowds of over 10,000 smiling people as Canning Agricultural, Horticultural & Recreational Society (aka CAHRS) celebrated our 110th year of enriching the community. Whilst 2020 comes with a very different set of circumstances, we are pleased to announce the Canning Show 2020 this year is planned to be held Friday 6 & Saturday 7 November, preparing to evolve, involve and inspire!

A creative wonderland with community heart, the line-up and ticket details for the Canning Show will be announced closer to the event, as per usual, however we are excited to release the Exhibition Schedule Of Entries early. From 3-year-olds to teenager amateurs to experienced artisans, everyone is encouraged to have a go and start growing, baking, painting, photographing, sculpting, flower arranging and more. Get your creative juices flowing now and get ready to showcase your wares at the Canning Show. All entries will be exhibited at the event in November, with the best being awarded over $13,000 in cash prizes.

CAHRS CEO Dianne Begg comments, “All positive signs continuing regarding COVID-19, we’re looking forward to Canning Show igniting people’s creativity, pleasure and inspiration this year.” Whilst some changes will be made in the Show’s delivery, she adds, “It will remain fun, filled with exciting competitions, entertainment, and amazing value for money. With social distancing and safety measures to be considered, our team is working hard to ensure that every part of the Show will be the safest, most enjoyable experience possible.”

This year we’re excited to announce the Schedule Of Entries earlier than usual, to take advantage of these crazy times giving people more time to be crazily creative and productive!
