The Canning Show2024  was a big success, pulling in an audience of nearly 15,000 people and further solidifying the event as one of the most value-packed events on the community calendar. Also organised by our not-for-profit organisation, Cannington Agricultural, Horticultural & Recreational Society Inc (CAHRS), the Canning Show Exhibition Awards 2024 were held Saturday 16 November, celebrating in style the best work by amateur creatives, gardeners and more.

The heart and soul of the Show for 110+ years and now one of WA’s biggest competitions of this type, the Exhibition component this year saw 398 people exhibiting. There were 2,301 exhibits entered (an increase on our average over the last 5+years), showcasing an extraordinary diversity of ages, backgrounds, interests, cultures, and skills.

The Exhibition Awards saw the best of the best exhibitors awarded for these efforts, with trophies, sashes and certificates handed out, on top of the $14,000+ in cash prizes that went to the best exhibits. Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds’ brand new Canning Agricultural Pavilion hosted a most golden dinner affair for distinguished guests, award-winning exhibitors and CAHRS committee, members, volunteers, and staff – many of them arriving dressed in “Middel Eastern-themed attire”. This year’s awards were an amazing showcase of the community’s creativity and talent, in which the applause was loud as the best exhibit and exhibitors were awarded.

Coming in first place, Brad Lewis-McKnight again received top honours, winning the George H Wilson Perpetual Award for the exhibitor with the most points gained from placements overall, for the third year in a row. Brad

entered classes in Flowers, Fruit & Vegetables, Herbs, Home & Dairy Produce, Home Cooking, and Photography, amassing a tally of 157 exhibits and 375 points.

Other important achievements:

  • Runner up for the George H Wilson Perpetual Trophy: Alice Johnsoncame in second place, alongside her father Robert Johnson, in third place.
  • Alice Johnson continued her domination of the Youth classes, again taking the Most Points Overall in Youth, the sixth year in a row!
  • Rossmoyne Senior High School student and newcomer Adam Al-Shabib takes the Maxine Wylie Perpetual Trophy for Best Exhibit in Youth Home Cooking.
  • Dianne Begg, former CEO turned Champion, lands her first win in this year’s Canning Show Exhibition.
